Member Spotlight: Connie Shorb

When it comes to her art, Connie Shorb is a lifelong learner.

As a student at Rollins College in Florida, majoring in studio art, she explored printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, illustration, and painting in acrylics. After graduation, she was looking for a way to continue her studies and gain more experience. She became a member of York Art Association, allowing her to continue learning and show her work locally.

“The staff and members provided encouragement and the expertise of experienced artists,” she says. “I could continue my education in an organized, professional setting, without paying a hefty tuition.”

After a few years of working in computer graphics, Connie’s focus shifted to raising her family and competing in local, statewide, national, and international golf tournaments. Years later, COVID restrictions put her back into the studio full time, making up for years of limited art practice. She returned to YAA, at first participating in virtual, and then in-person classes.

In her absence, many things at YAA had changed. There was a new website, more classes, more exhibitions, new staff, and soon there will even be a new building when the organization relocates in 2026.

“Now, many, many years after I used to pack my lunch and occasionally help provide volunteer staff for the building, I’m looking forward to discovering all that the new building will have to offer,” she says. “We all are watching YAA’s distinguished legacy evolve. More physical classroom and gallery spaces will certainly allow for more classes, activities, and new kinds of education opportunities. Members of all ages and levels of experience will be able to continue to enjoy an even greater variety of workshops and types of classes.”

These days, she tries to participate in most every exhibition and takes classes as often as she can, eager to continue learning from others. She is particularly impressed with YAA’s dedicated instructors – talented artists who take time to share their knowledge and professional experience.

Connie is one of YAA’s longest-standing members, and is currently featured in our retrospective invitational exhibition, A Fond Farewell. The exhibition, marking our 120th anniversary, runs through June 1 and includes nine artists who have been active throughout our time in our current location on Marshall Street.

“I have certainly enjoyed and benefited from my 50-plus years as a member of YAA,” Connie says. “The opportunity to meet and learn from so many talented artists has been so special. I look forward to the future in my art and friendships. I will continue to promote York Art Association in hopes that others may also experience a lifetime of special opportunities.”
