York Art Association: Celebrating 120 Years of Art, Community, and Creativity

Updated: Apr 11

In 1905, a group of visionary artists and art enthusiasts came together with a shared goal—to create a space where the visual arts could thrive in York.

From that idea, York Art Association (YAA) was born. Now, 120 years later, we stand as a pillar of artistic expression, education, and community connection, proudly carrying forward a legacy built by generations of talented and passionate individuals.

A Rich Legacy of Artistic Excellence

For over a century, YAA has been dedicated to fostering a love for the visual arts. Through countless exhibitions, workshops, classes, and lectures, we have provided opportunities for artists of all levels to develop their skills, showcase their work, and engage with a supportive creative community. Our gallery has seen the works of emerging artists alongside established professionals, and our classrooms have been filled with students eager to learn and explore new artistic techniques.

As we reflect on our journey, we recognize the many talented artists, volunteers, and supporters who have shaped YAA into what it is today. The association has been a launching pad for many careers and an inspiring place where creativity flourishes.

Celebrating 120 Years: The Fond Farewell Invitational

In honor of this remarkable milestone, we invite you to join us for a special event: the Fond Farewell Invitational on April 27, from 2–4 PM.

This retrospective exhibition will showcase the evolution of the artistic journey some of our long standing members & artists have taken during their tenure with the association. This will feature nine artists: Linda Sommer, Phyllis Disher Fredericks, Connie Shorb, Susan Biros Dawes, Marion Kendall Stephenson, Eva Gorski, Nancy Boileau, Medford Smith, and Betty Sampsell.

This event is more than a celebration—it is a tribute to the lasting impact that York Art Association and its members have had on the cultural landscape of our community. It is also a moment to look ahead as we continue to evolve and embrace new opportunities for growth and artistic innovation.

Thank You for Being Part of Our Story

York Art Association’s success would not be possible without the incredible people who have been part of our journey. Whether you are an artist, a student, a patron, or a supporter of the arts, you are a vital part of our community. Your passion and dedication ensure that YAA remains a home for creativity and inspiration.

Join us as we celebrate 120 years of art, connection, and transformation—and raise a toast to the next chapter in our story!
