Member Spotlight: Mary Schultz

Updated: Mar 9

In 2016, shortly after Mary Schultz began taking classes at York Art Association, an instructor encouraged her to enter her first piece for exhibition.

“Julie Yontz Rupp encouraged us during one of her classes,” Mary remembers. “She explained how to finish a piece, install the hardware for hanging, and gave us moral support. That piece won a third-place award and it sold during the opening reception. I was hooked!”

Mary soon began volunteering, working in the office, but had to pause her service while taking care of her late husband as he became homebound. After his passing, she rekindled her involvement, joining the Hospitality Committee, a group responsible for coordinating refreshments for exhibition opening receptions.

One of the most valuable benefits of YAA membership for Mary is her participation with the Gallery Group, which gives members the opportunity to display and sell their original art in various public offices, cafes, and venues around town, most with a lower commission than what a fine art gallery would charge.

When friends wonder why she takes classes when she already knows how to paint, Mary reminds them that she is self-taught and will always have more to learn. She enjoys the opportunity to explore different techniques, tools, and materials through YAA.

“The instructors are very knowledgeable and so willing to share their talents,” she says. “I love the sense of community you experience during a class or workshop. Being around other artists is inspiring.”

Mary is excited about the future of the organization, and looks forward to the move next year to the Little Green Church in the Avenues neighborhood of York City. She is particularly pleased about the expanded exhibit areas, classrooms, and programming opportunities the new space will enable.

The incidental benefit of being involved with YAA, as so many people have discovered, is getting to know others with similar interests.

Mary sums it up: “I value the close and lasting friendships I have made with other members.”
