Musical Impressions of Color: A Call for Art!

Updated: Jan 24

Calling all artists! One of our themed exhibitions for March 2024 is Musical Impressions of Color. We are presenting this call early to you so you have time to create your art specific to this exhibit! Each artist is welcome to enter up to 2 pieces.

How does music affect your personal art? This exhibition will explore the connection between music and color and its unique influence on you as an artist.

We suggest the following process when creating work for this exhibit.

  1. For each work, choose a single piece of music you enjoy of any genre.

  2. Listen to the music when you are quiet, with your eyes closed and let it wash over you.

  3. Identify what color comes to your mind OR a mood the music evokes while listening intently.

  4. If a specific color doesn’t come to you, identify a color associated with that mood, e.g. red for anger, violet for peace, orange or yellow for happy, blue for sad or melancholy.

  5. Create your art using that color as your key. You may listen to the piece in a loop as you create if it helps to complete your creative vision. Your piece does not have to be monochromatic, but the color needs to dominate the work.

The title of the song, or composition and the inspired will be required when you register your entries.

Here is a YouTube video of a playlist of music to try for inspiration.
