ABOUT THE ARTIST

Michal Gavish is a multimedia artist and art writer sharing her time between New York City and Washington, DC. She creates translucent fabric installations and videos that are inspired by her past work as research scientist and her ongoing collaborations with biologists at Stanford University, UCSF, and CUNY. For her, neurons, viruses, proteins, and crystals are not abstractions—they are figures, objects, and nano-scale landscapes, which inform scientists' communal imagination. Translating large data, molecular models and microscopic imagery into painting-installations or video-animations, has become part of her practice. She received her MFA in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute and her PhD in physical chemistry from CUNY. Gavish was invited to create work on site for the 2022 sculpture biennale in South Korea. She exhibited in solo shows at the Budapest Museum in Hungary, The Delaware Contemporary, LIU in Brooklyn, Garrison NY, BlackRock MD, The SFMOMA artists Gallery, Sandra Lee Gallery San Francisco to name a few. Among her group shows were The Korean Society of art and Media Council 2023, Seoul, Art on paper NY, Volta NY, Biobat Brooklyn, Yerba Buena, SF, Tachles Belin, Spinnerei Leipzig, Germany, Bogota, Colombia. She was featured in The seeds of Creation, a book about 18 NYC women artists by Cosmina Ene. Gavish was awarded several artists residencies at Changwon South Korea, Cooper Union New York, Spinnerei Leipzig Germany, Multicultural Budapest Hungary and Palo Alto CA. She lectures extensively and teaches college art and science. Her work is in public and private collections in Munich, Budapest, New York, North Carolina, London, Israel and Washington DC.
