Volunteer Spotlight: Ray Edmison

ree

For nearly a decade, Ray Edmison has been a devoted and enthusiastic volunteer at York Art Association.

His relationship with YAA began nine years ago while studying under watercolor artist Leona Cauley, and grew from there. He now wears many hats at YAA – from serving on the gallery, hanging, and hospitality committees to playing an active role as a board member. You may also find him gallery sitting on a Sunday afternoon or greeting artists on exhibition intake days. Ray is the sort of reliable volunteer the staff can also call upon in a pinch, knowing he’ll show up and lend a hand.

For Ray, one of the best parts of volunteering is being part of hanging each exhibition.

“Seeing the variety of styles and the imagination and talent of our local artists brings great joy,” he says. “Plus, the challenge of arranging all that variety to look cohesive.”

During his time with the organization, he has realized several key takeaways. First and foremost, that everyone has some form of inherent artistic talent, and that our lives are better when we have an outlet to express it.

He’s also been surprised to discover how many people outside York County know about YAA.

“It has a serious reputation for advancing art,” he says.

Ray finds inspiration in every exhibition. “Viewing the art after hanging each show makes me stand back and say WOW!” he says. “Seeing the quality of art in our exhibitions makes me a proud member.”

Looking ahead, he’s excited about the move into YAA’s new location, and all the potential it holds for artists and patrons alike. The move will expand the organization’s ability to offer the community easy access to outstanding exhibitions and art classes at all levels.

Ray encourages others to get involved, citing the value he’s found through volunteerism and membership; his own experience has led to both artistic and personal growth, as well as an enhanced view of the visual arts.

“Because of my association with YAA, my appreciation of art and those who create it has been enhanced. We desperately need all of the arts in these challenging times.”
