Sally Little Danyo Gallery Presents: Connie Shorb

I started drawing as a child, continuing through my elementary and high school years. I knew all along that was what I wanted my major to be in college. I had the opportunity to work in printmaking, sculpture, and illustration before settling into mixed media. As I look back at my work exploring a range of styles, I had started doing work in mixed media before I even knew it was called mixed media!

When home computers were very new, I spent several years designing and creating graphic screens for a company that developed a marketing program for the banking industry. The computer screen actually looked like graph paper and the color palette was extremely limited. The functional limitations from that period continue to influence a geometric design approach that can be seen in a lot of my artwork today.

I am most recognized in Pennsylvania not for my time in the art studio but on the golf course. Those years can be highlighted by 48 Amateur and 21 Senior Club Championships at the Country Club of York, 31 Amateur and 15 Senior Women’s York County Amateur Golf Association Championships, 3 Pennsylvania State Amateur Championships, 10 Pennsylvania State Senior Championships and qualifying and playing in 40 USGA National Championships from age 15 on.

As my competitive career on the course has finally come to an end, I’m now enjoying returning to creating once again. The York Art Association has played a big part in my renewed artistic development as I continue to take classes and have enjoyed the opportunity once again to meet and learn from other artists. The Association continues to be enriched by the dedication and talents of those involved on all levels.

My paintings, collages, prints, and sculptures have been exhibited in shows and galleries in Florida and Pennsylvania. Much of my original work was created for custom commissions designed for specific environments in the home or office. I am perhaps most comfortable working with a wide variety of mixed media in constructing non-objective forms. Color, form, and texture create a wide variety of surface treatments, adding another dimension to a two-dimensional canvas. Expression is free of the restrictions imposed by realistic images.

I use strong design, pure colors, geometric forms, and even sculptural effects to create a real visual experience. My artwork becomes something significant and not an imitation of life. It can produce mood, emotion, a sense of order, or simply be something unique to enjoy!
