York Art Association does maintain a waiting list, so if you cannot get into the current class, you will be placed on a waiting list.

W1.  Manju Gupta: HENNA (TATTOO) DESIGN FOR BEGINNERS (all levels)

Learn the basics of Indian Tattoo, (Henna)! You will make various tattoo designs on your palm, leg or anywhere on your body using a paste made of natural herbs, (Henna). It is used to decorate our bodies for special festive occasions and it also gives a relaxing feeling. You will learn to make your own paste from leaves or henna powder, make your own creative designs or select one from a print, and learn curing techniques to achieve the best results in easy steps.

(Please note: Henna is a natural substance. It may cause skin reactions in sensitive individuals. Students under 18 years of age must have a parental written permission slip to participate.)

W2. Margaret Evans: PASTELS UNLEASHED (WITH OTHER MEDIA) (all levels)

Learn to simplify plein-air painting with pastels, pen, wash & watercolor (or any
medium you prefer) with visits to local scenes, and plenty of indoor studio sessions
to develop your outdoor sketches, and learn to be imaginative, creative and
confident in your painting. Margaret will demonstrate with pastels, showing wet &
dry techniques, as well as how to do creative watercolor sketching outdoors to use
on your indoor sessions. From quick sketches to finished paintings, this workshop
will teach you lots of new techniques, and help you develop your style of painting
whether you are a complete beginner or advancing student

W3. Phyllis Disher Fredericks: COMPOSITION (all levels)

Is composition a mystery to you? Do you know compositional fundamentals but do
not know how to put principle into practice? This three day workshop will help
demystify how to integrate good compositional techniques into your work. Through
lecture, demonstrations and simple exercises you will learn the “tools” of good
composition. Artists working in all mediums and genres are welcome. This course
is designed for beginning to advanced students. A supply list will be provided upon
registration.

W4. Paul Gallo: PLEIN-AIR PAINTING 101 (intermediate to advanced)

This workshop will explore plein-air painting thru nature-inspired and possibly urban landscapes. Students will work directly from nature in oils, acrylic, watercolor, or pastels. Note that the instructor will work in oils. Students will need to supply their own materials and a portable easel. The first class will meet at the York Art Association for a demonstration and basic instructions before going outdoors to paint. In the event of inclement weather we will work in the studio. W5. Melanie Graffius: MONOTYPE PRINTING WITH THE GELLI PLATE
(all levels)

The Gelli Plate is a tool that encourages play. Essentially, it’s a big squishy rectangle of a gelatin-like substance. It makes printing super easy! Right from the start, you’ll be creating colorful and unique backgrounds on paper (and fabric!) for art journals, cards, and other mixed media projects. Your image can be done in layers or have layer after layer building up the pattern and color to create one-of-a-kind papers! With the monotype printing process you never know what you’re going to get. This workshop is loaded with techniques for both beginners and veterans of the Gelli Plate. W6. Barb Buchanan: DRAWING WORKSHOP (all levels)

This workshop is for beginning as well as more advanced artists wishing to improve their drawing skills. We will start by learning to measure for accurate proportions. We will cover topics such as line, value, shading, using positive and negative space to achieve accuracy, texture and composition. Students will work in graphite and charcoal on white and toned papers.

W7. Deborah Nell: EXPLORING THE WORLD OF YUPO (all levels)

Whether you are an experienced painter or beginner you will have fun exploring the world of Yupo paper. Yupo, a slick synthetic paper facilitates experimentation and expression. Deborah Nell who has been painting on Yupo since 2007 will share her techniques and knowledge with you. Come and learn how to paint on Yupo with acrylic ink and acrylic paint. The use of atomizers as well as stencils, foam rollers, Kleenex, Q-tips, straws, watercolor pencils and rubbing alcohol will be taught. You will learn how to paint realistically as well as expressively on this amazing paper. Yupo paper can be purchased from Deborah at the first class. A list of supplies to bring to class will be available upon registration.

W8. Lynne Yancha: LUMINOUS WATERCOLOR (all levels)

Based on 40 years of experience, Lynne’s goal is not only to share her knowledge of watercolor painting, but to encourage you to trust your instincts as you paint. This workshop will focus on figurative and animal subjects. She will address power through design; paint application; the importance of light, mystery, and mistakes; use of white acrylic to enhance details; techniques to make skin tones and techniques to combine elements of abstraction and realism in your watercolor paintings. Lynne will work one-on-one with each student addressing each student’s needs and will present numerous demonstrations based on the students’ requests. ** AMERICAN VISIONARY ART MUSEUM BUS TRIP **

York Art Association is sponsoring a day long bus trip to Baltimore for a visit to the AMERICAN VISIONARY ART MUSEUM – space is limited, so book early!

This year’s theme is “The Big Hope Show.” This original and unabashedly idealistic art exhibition champions the radiant and transformative power of hope. Over twenty-five visionary artists, among them “super survivors” of enormous personal traumas, exhibit soulful creations reflecting their personal transcendence, and often, heightened or newfound creativity and sense of humor.

This unique museum is nestled at the base of Federal Hill, near Rusty Scupper Restaurant, and with easy access to the Inner Harbor (Baltimore Water Taxi or the free Charm City Circulator).
